Introduction: The Myth of Inconsistency
If you’ve ever told yourself, “I just need to be more consistent,” you’re not alone. As mompreneurs, we often hold ourselves to unrealistic expectations of unwavering productivity, perfectly timed content, and fully balanced schedules. Expectations that we tell ourselves we aren’t doing, and we need to do more in both business and in motherhood.
I think most of us would be surprised to hear you are already more consistent than you realize.
Every day, you show up. You tend to the invisible work of your household. You meet the emotional and logistical needs of your children. You keep your business afloat and life in small moments between school drop-offs and snack breaks. You are there for your kids and you keep going with the day to day you need to do on your to do list. Yet, we carry guilt around what we haven’t done.
Why?
Why We Feel Inconsistent
The root of inconsistency isn’t always lack of discipline; it’s often a mismatch between our expectations and our current capacity.
We assume consistency means doing the same big actions every day. For some that launching, posting, showing up, and scaling. The reality though is that your bandwidth fluctuates. There are growth spurts, sick days, emotional loads, school plays, and all the moving pieces of parenting. This isn’t something new but in the society of today, it’s something that we don’t necessarily focus on. I’ve seen it begin to peak it’s way out in posts more often on social media. Focusing on the small things that bring joy and encouraging being present. I smile as I scroll past these as I start to see a bit of a shift towards the understanding of who we are as humans. But let’s start back at the basics a bit more as an entrepreneur as well.
We need to redefine consistency not as perfection, but as rhythm.
Motherhood teaches us to respond, adapt, and return. That’s one of those superpowers and that’s the very muscle we need to strengthen in our business: the ability to come back, again and again to what matters.
The Power of Repetition and Rhythm
I want to challenge you to zoom out for a moment. Every day you get the kids up, make breakfast, make sure they are taken care of, have lunch and their needs met. You then deal with the twists and turns of the mental overload which in toddler speak is usually a temper tantrum or you have to pivot because something didn’t go right. That’s the boo boo that you had to kiss and put a band aid on and cuddle your kiddo for five minutes. Then there’s the consistency of the bedtime story and routine and going to bed. Even on the messiest days, there’s repetition those are the systems, habits, and rituals that keep life moving.
Business is no different.
To scale and sustain your business, you need repeatable processes, clear messaging, and consistent visibility. It’s not about chasing new tactics daily, it’s about refining and repeating what works.
Consistency in business can look like:
- Showing up weekly to email your audience, even if it’s short and sweet.
- Streamlining your client onboarding, so it doesn’t eat your energy.
- Posting valuable content regularly, instead of waiting until it’s “perfect.”
- Reviewing your metrics monthly, so you can pivot and improve with clarity.
Consistency in motherhood isn’t just the daily habits, it’s actually seen even more in the actions and growth you’ve had, and it truly expanded your capacity in ways no business course ever could.
You’ve learned to:
- Love deeper than you thought possible.
- Solve problems creatively in the moment.
- Hold boundaries while nurturing others.
- Think long-term while managing the chaos of now.
Leverage what motherhood has taught you to lean into the parts of your business that need you. What is your vision, your voice, who are you as a leader?
Why does it feel so hard in the grind of motherhood and as a small business owner/entrepreneur. I personally think so much of this comes from the noise of the world around us. Technology is amazing and powerful but also distracting! So how do you move forward when you have a business that you love but you aren’t making the profit margin you desire and you are overwhelmed by the day to day, your to do list is endless and you aren’t really sure if it’s working? Well, just like motherhood, business is hard.
Speak with Clarity. Show Up with Consistency.
How do we take actionable steps to move past these challenges and move through the hard parts? Well, just like you do with your kids.
Be clear on your goals and your message. Your presence needs to be felt but it doesn’t need to do everything! It means choosing what you work on as a business owner and what you delegate, it means truly asking what’s working and not and this process just like the challenges of motherhood are normal! And yes, this repeats itself! Life is a constant evolution of building resilience and changing what works for you and your family and business in that season!
Start with a few basics…
Ask yourself:
- What message do I want to be known for?
- How can I show up consistently in a way that’s sustainable?
- What parts of my business need structure so I can lead more and hustle less?
- What is important to my life and family’s life for the next year, five years and beyond? (P.S. These will be different and that’s ok and they can change!)
Cultivate What Matters
Just like in motherhood, the results in business don’t come from one big effort, they come from showing up, nurturing, and cultivating what matters over time.
Consistency isn’t about rigidity. It’s about returning — over and over — to what moves the needle, what builds relationships, and what creates impact.
Let your business rhythm reflect the grace and grit you already show every day as a mother.
You are already consistent in so much so don’t sell yourself short. You need to recognize the powerful rhythms you already carry and apply them with intention.
